Professor Hongjun Lu, who was to have received the PAKDD Distinguished
Contributions award at PAKDD05, passed away 4 March 2005. The award will
be presented during PAKDD05 in recognition of his tremendous contributions

Professor Lu, as one of the founders of the PAKDD series of conferences has served as the Steering Committee Co-chair from 1998-2001, and as Chair from 2001-2003. He served as the program co-chair of the inaugural PAKDD, held in 1997 in Singapore. He continued to serve the PAKDD conference series as a member of program committee 1998-2004. He was the invited keynote speaker at PAKDD 2001 and has contributed numerous publications to the PAKDD conferences over the years. Professor Lu has played a key leadership role in nurturing and establishing the PAKDD series of conferences to become a world recognized forum for the dissemination of leading edge research in the areas of data mining and knowledge discovery.
Professor Lu has also served in many important and influential positions in the research community. He was elected as a Trustee of the VLDB Endowment in 2000. He is a member of the Advisory Board of ACM SIGMOD (1998-2002). He is an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE) (1996-2000), an Editor for Knowledge and Information Systems: An international Journal (1998-2001). He has served on the program committees of numerous international conferences in database.
Professor Lu is currently Professor Computer Science, Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology. He was previously Professor Computer Science
at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. degree from
Tsinghua University, China and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University
of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Lu has made significant contributions
to database and data mining research. He has made contributions in many
areas, especially in the many important issues related to query processing
and optimization, data warehousing and data mining. He has made long-term
contributions, with over 200 research publications in scientific journals,
conferences and workshop proceedings. Over the years, he has clearly demonstrated his value as a leader, researcher,
scholar and teacher.
