Welcome To PAKDD2003

On behalf of the organizing committee of PAKDD2003, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to Korea for the Seventh Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD2003).

The PAKDD conference is a major forum for academic researchers and industry practitioners in the Pacific Asia region to share original research results and development experiences from different KDD related areas such as data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition and discovery, data visualization, and knowledge-based systems.

In its seventh year, PAKDD has reached new heights of recognition as a quality forum for the dissemination and discussion of KDD research. This is evident from the high number of submissions and the highly selective nature of the review process. Out of 215 submissions, only 38 were selected as full papers and 20 as short papers for inclusion in the proceedings. Given this, we were unable to accommodate many high quality papers. We thank authors of all submitted papers for their efforts, which provided the basic ingredient for developing an exceptionally solid technical program. PAKDD has become a truly international forum, as is evident from the fact that papers were submitted from 22 countries across six continents. Similarly, the program committee consisted of 70 members from five continents.

We have the privilege of having two distinguished speakers deliver keynotes. Rakesh Agrawal, an IBM fellow at IBM Almaden Research Center, will deliver a talk on Privacy Aware Data Management and Analytics, which is recently becoming a hot issue. Jaideep Srivastava at University of Minnesota will discuss on Web Mining--Accomplishments and Future Directions, which should provide the audience new insights into future development of data and web mining.

PAKDD 2003 has two international workshops held in conjunction with the main conference: Mining Data for Actionable Knowledge and Biological Data Mining. The proceedings of these workshops are being published separately.

This conference is organized by the Advanced Information  Technology Research Center(AITrc) at KAIST and Statistical Research Center for Complex Systems(SRCCS) at Seoul National University, both being research centers of excellence supported by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation(KOSEF). We have a number of sponsors who made generous contributions to make the conference successful. They are Korea Telecom(KT), United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research(AFOSR), and Asian Office of Aerospace Research and Development(AOARD). It is also being held in cooperation with the ACM¡¯s Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining(ACM SIGKDD). Finally, we have two major academic sponsors: the Korea Information Science Society(KISS) and the Korea Data Mining Society(KDMS), who greatly contributed to organizing and advertising the conference and encouraging  their members to participate.

At the banquet on Thursday, we will have a performance of Korean traditional music by distinguished professor Jae-Suk Moon at Ewha Woman¡¯s University. We are grateful for her generous acceptance of our invitation.

Many People, including hundreds of authors, reviewers, presenters, and organizers, contributed to PAKDD 2003. We thank them all for their dedication and help, without which the conference would not have been a success.
